The Budget Review Meeting is the most significant activity that the Shoreham Village Council engages in each year. It determines how your tax dollars will be spent. Unfortunately, the current Shoreham Village Council seems disinterested in keeping Shoreham residents informed about this crucial meeting.

Under the Open Meetings Act, the Shoreham Village Council is obligated to inform the public of any special meetings by prominently posting a notice on their website and at the building where council meetings are held. However, there is no mention of the Budget Meeting on the front page of their website—a clear violation of the Open Meetings Act. They have only placed a notice on the bulletin board outside the Village Hall, which is highly impractical for residents who cannot drive to check the board regularly.

This lack of effort to ensure residents are aware of the Budget Meeting is yet another example of the current council’s lack of transparency.

This Year’s Budget Highlights

Road Upgrades

  • No Major Road Upgrades: The budget this year contains no funds allocated for major road upgrades.

Park Improvements

  • Declining Condition: Our once charming neighborhood park has suffered from neglect and has rapidly declined over the past two years. It resembles an inner-city park rather than the lovely space it once was.
  • Unspent Funds: Last year, the Council allocated $20,000 for major park upgrades. However, under the direction of the current council president, Robert Clarke, none of that money was spent. Aside from removing fallen trees and branches due to a lack of maintenance, the only improvements were new soccer nets and painting the playground equipment.
  • New Allocation: This year, the Council has allocated $150,000 for park upgrades. These funds are designated for replacing the cracked, narrow walking paths and widening them to accommodate two people walking side by side. Unfortunately, no money has been allocated for the cracked and crumbling tennis courts.
